Telegram is one of the few mainstream apps with proxy support built into its settings, and it supports two kinds: standard SOCKS5 and Telegram's own MTProto proxies. The practical rule: MTProto is for getting Telegram to connect at all on a network that blocks it; SOCKS5 is for controlling where Telegram thinks you are and who you trust with your traffic. Android
- Open Telegram and go to Settings, then Data and Storage.

Checking it works
Telegram's own status line ("Connected", with a ping) confirms the tunnel is up. To confirm what Telegram's servers now see, look at the sessions list under Settings, then Devices: the current session shows the IP and the location Telegram has resolved for it. The mistake that gets accounts flagged: a moving IP
This is the part most setup guides skip. Telegram, like every messaging platform, watches for sessions that behave like a stolen account. An account that logs in from one city and then, ten minutes later, appears in another, and then a third, matches that pattern exactly. That is what happens if you point Telegram at a rotating proxy that changes the exit IP on every connection: expect repeated code prompts, "new login" alerts, and in the worst case a temporary restriction.
The fix is to give Telegram one address and keep it. Two ways to do that:
- A sticky session on a residential or mobile proxy. The provider holds one exit IP for a set period rather than rotating per request. Good when you want a specific country and can tolerate the IP changing every few hours.
- A static residential IP. One address that is yours for as long as you rent it, from a consumer ISP range, which is what a normal user looks like. Whatever you pick, do not share the same IP across a stack of unrelated accounts. The proxy is meant to make one account look like one consistent person; ten accounts behind one address make all ten look linked.
Troubleshooting
- "Connecting" forever. Wrong port or protocol. SOCKS5 and HTTP proxies use different ports at most providers; check which one you were given. MTProto secrets are typed exactly, no spaces.
- Connects, then fails when you send a message. Authentication is failing after the handshake. Re-enter the username and password; if your provider whitelists IPs instead of using credentials, make sure your current IP is on the list.
- Works on Wi-Fi, fails on mobile data. Some carrier networks block SOCKS ports. Try the provider's alternative port or an MTProto server.
- Calls do not connect. Turn on Use Proxy for Calls, or accept that calls bypass the proxy. Voice through a distant proxy also adds latency.
- Constant login codes. Your IP is rotating. Switch to a sticky session or a static IP as described above.

Searches for free SOCKS5 or MTProto proxies for Telegram are common, and the servers exist. Understand what you get: an operator you cannot identify who sees your IP and your connection pattern, a server that may vanish tomorrow, and on MTProto, a sponsored channel pinned into your app. Telegram's transport encryption keeps the message contents private either way, so the risk is metadata and reliability, not eavesdropping.
